How Master Key Systems Work: Tiers, Levels, and the Logic Behind the Hardware
A master key system is built on a pinning architecture inside the lock cylinder itself. Every lock in the system contains a standard shear line — the point at which the correct key aligns all the driver and key pins — plus a second shear line set specifically for the master key. This is achieved through the precise addition of master wafers (also called master pins) during the pinning process. A change key, sometimes called a servant key, opens only its designated lock. A master key opens every lock in a defined group. A grand master key sits above that, opening every lock in the entire system. Depending on the complexity of your building, systems can include great-grand master levels as well, giving ownership or executive leadership access across multiple buildings or campuses.
The discipline required to design this correctly matters enormously. Poorly executed systems create what are called ghost keys — unintended key cuts that can open locks they shouldn't.
